THE LANGUAGE OF LANDSCAPE

Idris has a deep connection with the wild, empty spaces of the Australian landscape. In his work he aims to capture its spirit rather than its physicality. Bridging the gap between figurative and abstraction, and inspired by indigenous painting and storytelling, his paintings are dreamlike, expressionistic and raw.

ROYAL NATIONAL PARK NSW | ART WORKSHOP

Sydney's heritage-listed Royal National Park was established in 1879 and is the world's second oldest national park. The four day workshop will be a lively combination of painting, demonstrations and informal discussions on composition, colour, content and the illusion of space. During the workshop, Idris will expose the students to a variety of ideas and approaches with a mix of teaching and demonstrations.

Participants will improve their skills in painting and drawing directly from nature under the guidance of artist and experienced educator, Idris Murphy.

This is a great opportunity to experience the wild beauty of the Australian bush, learn a new skill or develop new ones in a peaceful and relaxed environment.

ACCOMMODATION | CHALDERCOT
Enjoy this absolute waterfront setting in the stunningly beautiful Royal National Park, only fifteen minutes drive from Sutherland and an hour from Sydney CBD. A converted historic homestead, Chaldercot's large, covered verandahs look out over the pristine Port Hacking River and is perfect for al fresco dining and painting. Its facilities include a centralised dining room with wood fire, a small meeting hall, guest wifi, BBQ and a secluded retreat on the banks of the river. The rooms have simple bunk-style beds (both single and double) and ensuite bathrooms. There is a jetty/pontoon if you wish to arrive by boat or bring your own kayak.

Non painting partners are very welcome. There is plenty to do and see in the area from bush walking, reading,  kayaking or just chilling out.

DAY 2 - ROYAL NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, the guests will head out to find a location to set up and paint en plein air, while Idris assists workshop members individually throughout the day. This property provides a variety of wonderful subjects to paint from expansive river vistas to the more intimate secret corners of the bushland surroundings. Morning and afternoon tea will be served back at the Homestead. At sunset we meet in front of the open fire for drinks and an informal discussion on the Principles of Painting. The evening meal together is a great opportunity to get to know each other and discuss the day's painting.
