LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH IDRIS MURPHY & ROSS LAURIE (MARCH 12- 15, 2018)

Join us for a 4 day/3 night landscape painting workshop at the Hunter Valley Retreat set in 200 acres of beautiful Australian bushland.

ROSS LAURIE - LANDSCAPE PAINTER

Ross Laurie

Artist Ross Laurie and his family live on a farm in Walcha, on the Northern Tablelands of NSW between Tamworth and Armidale. Outback Australia and it’s rugged landscape have inspired his large, chromatically warm and dynamic landscapes. Ross produces an impressive variety of images, from small charcoal sketches to densely worked studies in oil stick, to large oils on canvas.

Ross has been exhibiting in solo and selected group shows since 1981 in commercial and regional galleries around Australia. He was part of the group of 13 high profile Australian Artists who went to Fowlers Gap Research Station in 2012 with Artist Profile Magazine.

Primarily a painter, he has been teaching painting and drawing for twenty five years. His work is a response to the country on and around his farm at Walcha, in northern NSW. Ross Laurie is represented by King Street Gallery, Sydney.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP

The 4 day workshop focuses on painting and sketching directly from nature. Participants will improve their skills under the guidance of artists and experienced educators, Idris Murphy and Ross Laurie. During the workshop, they will expose the students to a variety of ideas and approaches with a mix of teaching, demonstrations and informal discussions on composition, colour, content, influences and the illusion of space, over meals in the evenings. Learn a new skill or develop new ones in a beautiful and relaxed environment. Non painting partners are very welcome.

4 DAY LANDSCAPE PAINTING RETREAT IN THE HUNTER VALLEY (MARCH 12-15, 2018)

DAY 1:  MONDAY MARCH 12 - ARRIVE HUNTER VALLEY RETREAT

Workshop guests will meet for lunch at 12.30pm at the Hunter Valley Retreat in Quarrobolong, 90 minutes drive north of Sydney and 40 minutes inland from Newcastle. After settling into your villa, you will meet up with Idris and Ross who will outline the workshop content over the next days as well as take you on an orientation walk around the property, looking for suitable painting and sketching locations. The rest of the afternoon will be spent sketching. The guests will split into 2 groups and spend the next 1 ½ days with that artist. At 6pm we will meet for drinks and discussions by the artists on art, followed by dinner.

DAY 2:  HUNTER VALLEY RETREAT

After breakfast, each artist will take their group out on a painting expedition. This may be on or around the property or they may drive the group to another location. The artists will walk you through the bush to find suitable painting locations and assist workshop members individually throughout the day. The ruggedly beautiful landscape provides a variety of wonderful subjects to paint. Morning tea and lunch will be taken out on location. Each evening before dinner, guests will meet for informal discussions with Idris and Ross on the Principles of Painting.

DAY 3:  HUNTER VALLEY RETREAT

Today workshop members will work with the other artist, painting in outdoor locations. The evening will include a painting demonstration and discussion.

DAY 4: HUNTER VALLEY RETREAT

The morning of our final day will be spent painting in the same group as the previous day. After lunch we will all get together with the work produced over the past 3 days for a group critique with Ross and Idris.

The workshop finishes at 4pm.
